removing xscreensaver

In order to free up some resources I want to remove xscreensaver from my system and just have the facility for the monitor go blank after a time. How do I go about this? (I think I might have to use xlock or xautolock or xlockmore.)

PS I don't think my kernel supported APM when I installed Mandrake so it is switched off at the moment.

Vaughly recall a command - something like 'tty'. If you do tty it just tells you the number of the virtual terminal you're on, I think. So perhaps there are options for tty?? Look it up in manual, perhaps. Might be 'term', can't recall.

Hope helps.
