Removing LILO: Complications

Hi everyone,

I have been running Windows XP on a vpr Matrix 170B4 notebook. I used a Morphix Linux install CD, and created three partitions with cfdisk: a Windows partition, a Linux swap partition, and a Linux partition.

LILO hung every time I tried to boot up, showing only "LI" on the screen. I found a lot of references to this problem online, but I'm not at all familiar with Linux, so the solutions were way over my head. I decided to forget about dual-boot for now, so I deleted all of the existing partitions, and created one new Windows partition. Reinstalled Win XP.

LILO is stuck in the master boot record now, and it hangs at startup. I can't get anything to load at all. Absolutely nothing works. Can't boot up in safe mode, either. I start the machine and no matter what, I get nothing but LI.

This probably wouldn't be a problem if I could access Windows Recovery Console, but the recovery CD included in my system doesn't include it. vpr Matrix tech support told me I'd have to *buy* a retail copy of Win XP, even though I already own a legal copy! Darn them!

And furthermore, I don't have a floppy drive on this machine.

Any suggestions? Know of a utility that I could download on another machine and burn to bootable CD?

Thanks.
Lisa

Lisa - I'm confused about your post because it sounds like you were getting the LI error once, but were able to repartition your drive and then reinstall XP, but now you only get the LI error no matter what. Assuming that you could just repeat the steps you did the first time and get to the point where you would be able to partition your drive, then at the C:\ prompt you can run the following (undocumented) command:

fdisk /mbr

This command is intended to put your MBR back into a Windows-friendly state. From there you should be able to reinstall XP and/or whatever OS you wish -- J.W.

So you can't boot the XP install CD to recovery mode? The app you want is called fixmbr.

If you can get a hold of a Win98 install CD boot to DOS and run fdisk /mbr.

Create a bootable CD on another machine with the win98 fdisk app.

Sorry I wasn't more clear. I have not been able to get to a DOS prompt since seeing the LI error. I repartitioned using cfdisk from the Morphix Linux CD. XP appears to install OK after repartitioning, but then the LI error shows when I boot up. I thought the XP install would overwrite LILO, but it doesn't seem to.

Thanks for the advice -- I'll try this tonight or tomorrow and let you know how it goes!

Yay! This worked perfectly. Thanks so much, guys.
