Removing Items in the RH9 Main Menu

Hello,

My silly problem is this:

I'm running RH9, and in the Main Menu, aka "start menu", there's a few programs that I want to remove. They've already been uninstalled, but for some reason, the starters still lurk in the menu. When I try to remove them by right-clicking on the entry, I get an error claiming the operation is unsupported. Any ideas as to why this would be? Seems to me like this would be an operation long implemented...
I hope I'm clear enough that someone understands what I'm trying to say

Thanks in advance.

As root, go to /usr/share/applications and delete the .desktop file that corresponds to the menu entry that you want removed. The changes take effect immediatley.

You can also add items to the menu by copying an existing .desktop file and modifying it using a text editor.

I hope this helps

It certainly did, thanks Ian.

Where in the .desktop file is the location specified relating to the main menu?
For example, say I want to put an entry in main -> accessories -> more accessories
Where is that specified?

Some of the lines are self explanitory, such as exec=, and icon=, but If you could explain what some of the other lines in the .desktop file mean I'd be most grateful!
