removing breaking packages

Hi guys, I've been trying to install something in ubuntu, unsuccessfully (tvheadend) and now when I run sudo apt-get update I get errors with that package. I've tried to remove it but I don't seem to be able to find the exact name of the package, any idea how to remove all of them please?
See output of sudo apt-get update

Code:

antobbo@antobbo-UX305CA:~$ sudo apt-get update

First of all, you need to sort out your software sources. Please paste the output from:

Code:

inxi -r
or, if you don't have inxi installed, from:

Code:

for i in /etc/apt/sources.list{,.d/*}; do echo file: $i; cat $i; echo ====; done

hydrurga 10-30-2018 06:05 PM

Also, please confirm what version of Ubuntu you are running. Thanks.

ondoho 10-31-2018 02:27 AM

it looks like you added some tvheadend sources for raspbian.
not cool.
you cannot just mix software sources from different distributions.
needless to say, tvheadend is not in ubuntu's repos, but kodi has some plugin for it.

Indeed. Or even different versions of the same distribution. There's a xenial in there with the trustys. If anything has actually been installed from those incorrect sources then the system could be in such a mess that a reinstall will be needed. I guess we'll find out when the OP gets back.

Hi thanks guys. Yes I've accidentally attempted to install the wrong sources...
Anyway I'm on ubuntu 14.04 and here is some output
Code:

antobbo@antobbo-UX305CA:~$ inxi -r
The program 'inxi' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install inxi
antobbo@antobbo-UX305CA:~$ for i in /etc/apt/sources.list{,.d/*}; do echo file: $i; cat $i; echo ====; done
file: /etc/apt/sources.list

hydrurga 11-02-2018 05:01 PM

Ok, thanks.

First of all, delete /etc/apt/sources.list.d/keepsolidinc.list and /etc/apt/sources.list.d/keepsolidinc.list.save as these are xenial repos, not trusty.

Then delete /etc/apt/sources.list.d/virtualbox.org.list and /etc/apt/sources.list.d/virtualbox.org.list.save as they are for bionic.

Then delete /etc/apt/sources.list.d/tvheadend.list as it contains raspbian sources.

Don't worry about deleting these. If you need any of the software then we can install the correct sources later on.

Because it's a duplicate, delete /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list.save.

Now on to the main Ubuntu repos. Using Software Sources (or the Ubuntu equivalent), disable deb[& deb-src] http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty-backports main restricted universe multiverse, unless you have this enabled for a very specific reason.

Same as the above for deb [& deb-src] http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu trusty main.

Disable the deb http://archive.canonical.com/ trusty partner line just below the above two as it is a duplicate.

Once you've done all that, run inxi-r again and paste it here. Thanks.

Hi thanks, I've removed the files you mentioned, but I don't seem to be able to disable anything as I don't seem to be able to find them (I'm using software and updates in ubuntu, here are some screeshots)

hydrurga 11-02-2018 06:00 PM

They're all there (I think). In the first screenshot, disable Independent (which I assume is Extras - definitely confusing) and the last Canonical Partners that is still checked.

In the third screenshot, disable "Unsupported updates (trusty-backports)".

Of course, you could always just run:

Code:

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
(ensuring that the Software and Updates window is closed so that they are not both trying to access the software sources directory)

and place # symbols at the start of the lines that you want to disable.

jazzo 11-08-2018 02:22 PM

That's done, here is the output
Code:

antobbo@antobbo-UX305CA:~$ for i in /etc/apt/sources.list{,.d/*}; do echo file: $i; cat $i; echo ====; done
file: /etc/apt/sources.list

Ok. Looks good.

Let's see if you have any non fully-installed packages:

Code:

dpkg -l | grep -v "^ii" | sed 's/=//g'

Thanks. These are all residual configurations from packages you've removed, so you can ignore them.

All looks good.

Is there anything else that you want to install at the moment? Are you experiencing any issues? If not, it appears that you're good to go.
