Remove write file access for single user?

We have an excel spreadsheet on a network shared drive (RedHat, Samba), the drive is shared for a linux group.

We want this file or the sub directory its in to have write permissions removed for just one user in the group without removing him from the group completely, as the user requires the group privelages for the rest of the files in the share.

I'm up with basic file permissions in Linux but am not sure how or if this can be done. In NT would simple be a matter of adding that user to the permissions on the file and turning off write privelages for just that user?

maybe an additional group in which all the other users are a member in addition to the global group and set group +w permissions.
