Were those files in the Recent Files sub-menu of your app menu?
No. They really were in the app menu.That explains why there was not a delete option when I right clicked them.

 by far the best option is to follow the accepted, long-standing advice; do things by the book, and always use the distro's own, carefully-maintained repositories.....because this practice has been proven to reliably work, countless times, over & over again, spanning a great many years.
Yes, I definitely gleaned that lesson from this experience.
