Removable device info

When giving konqueror the address "system:/media" I get a list of available devices with name, mount point, etc. Where does this information come from for use in one of my applications ? I looked in /proc but cannot usefully interpret the stuff. /etc/fstab is of no help either. Could anyone please give a hint.
