Reinstall Ubuntu 10.04 LTS without erasing partition

Recently, I've had problems with my Ubuntu partition on my computer, so I have decided that I might have to format the partition or reinstall Ubuntu.
My problem is that I have files on my partition that I would like to save. I've tried every tool I've found that allows Ext2 to be read in Windows, but none of them work for me. The best I have gotten is that I would be able to see the folders in /, but that is it.

I was wondering if it was possible to reinstall Ubuntu without having to erase the partition.

Boot from a Live CD - this will allow you to read all the files and copy them to some backup media

Or, you could install another version of Ubuntu, and then recover your data, then delete the old version.
