at the command line
su to root and type

(it's been a while since I used redhat , so it'seither

xf86config
or
xfree86config
or
redhat-config-xfree86

1 of those will work, the other two should return "command not found"

work through the config setup and you should be ok

Can you paste the details of the Xserver error?
P.S: Don't panic - everything in Linux can be repaired from the CLI

Unhappy redhat9 Xfree86 crash

Ok i tried the command
>redhat-config-xfree86 but it gave the same error
xconf.py,1885 with some Gdk warning

i checked the log file of xfreeserver and the error occurs as it is not able to load the bitmap module and the pcidata module
it says it fails to load so it unloads and the module does not exist......

i feel that all this is due to the modem package i ran that i downloaded as now in error log file it is showing the error of loading a pcidata

please do help soon.......

it seems a bit extreme for a modem package to try and hose your system. Since it says the file doesn't exist, see if you can find this file:
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libbitmap.a (this is the path it should be in, but see if you can find libbitmap.a anywhere else on your system with locate).
The other file is /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libpcidata.a
