Redhat, win2000 and win XP
 

currently my pc has windows2000 and windows xp,
i still has 4GB free space,
can i install redhat, and be able to boot XP and win2000 ?

my windows2000 is critical, i do not want something wrong happen, please advise me.

yes u can first get a copy of gnu parted or partion magic(partion magic has a gui you can do things easly) and defrag you drive using one of the programs separate your 4 gb space than start installing you system during installation redhat will ask you to use which partion choose existing space and start installation. thats all.

Easy solution. Install Red Hat to your free space. Create and use a boot floppy for Red Hat until you feel more confident.
You do need to read the Red Hat install docs.

So are you having a contest with your buddies on who can stuff more OS/Distros on 1 HD or what? I've been slightly following your posts, all seem to be related to dual+ boot setups. How about summarizing all your "boot" desires into 1 post so everyone can get a good picture at what's being tackled, it might help you out more than all your scattered, very related, posts.

I have two HDDs, 40GB maxtor and 60GB Seagate.
the maxtor was installed with Windows 2000 and XP, dual boot systems, I have matlab and visual studio in windows 2000, critical to me, therefore I think i better leave it intact.

Now, I plan to install Windows ME on my Seagate (for games playing :D ), and also Mandrake 9.0 and redhat 8.0 on the same HDD.

During the last weekend, I installed ME first, then Mandrake, it works fine. After that I install Redhat on the same HDD (I spare 4GB free space after mandrake), and disaster occured, it can not boot at all, hanged after CMOS message.

And some people here advised me to install in this sequence:
ME--->Redhat--->Mandrake.

I plan to do this:
ME (on C drive , 40GB) ---> Redhat (10GB, create boot disk for Grub) ---> Mandrake (10GB, creat boot disk for Lilo)

I'd skip the boot disk, and learn a boot loader, but otherwise, yeah, that's the order I'd go in as well. I'd skip installing a boot loader during the RH install, then Mandy will pickup your existing RH install and make an entry for it. From there it's moving the RH kernel to your mandrake /boot directory, editing the entry in lilo and re-run lilo to save the changes.

It all doesn't make sense unless you learn how to administer a boot loader though ;) From there it's as easy as lookin for a kernel name.

How to edit lilo ?

to edit lilo, edit lilo.conf in /etc and add the entrys you need.

The way I edit it is "Pico /etc/lilo.conf" then when I have added all the stuff I need then Run "lilo" and you are done, Restart and it should work.
