Redhat patch management
 

Hi all ,

In my company , there are Redhat 5 , 6 , 7 , currently I have manually update the patch for each server , would advise any good patch management method , is there any tools may help to do that ?

Hi,

I believe this is the reason RedHat has RHN and Spacewalk, and for larger deployments they have Satellite. Please check their site, and I'd recommend you stay within their tools to maintain your servers.

Its definitely a good idea to pay RedHat and get all your systems registered on RHN as above and try to stick to just SW for their repos or SW they approve.

Just to clarify, Satellite is the RHEL downstream version of Spacewalk.

If you don't want to pay, then you should replace RHEL with Centos and look at eg Spacewalk or similar.
Probably also a config management system like Puppet.

do you mean if I pay the subscription fee for the servers , that I may easily do the patch management for all servers , and no need to install any software ?

Given today is the end of Production Phase 3 for RHEL 5, I'd upgrade those RHEL 5 servers as a priority to RHEL 6 or RHEL 7.

ignore rhel v5 , how about the patch management of v6 /7 , have subscription of RHN , still need install software ?

Probably yes, however if you pay for support then RedHat will aid you with these efforts. Why is there some sort of problem about installing software? After all, you are talking about performing patch management, which in of itself is installing software.

My points here are that you seem to be seeking assistance. Well the assistance you are seeking is with a commercial product, a current product, one which has support. Therefore regardless of whether or not you would need to install one or more pieces of software, the intended result here is that RedHat would help you understand how best to manage patches for the various servers which you have. And as far as the platforms going end of life, they can provide you with support to upgrade or convert it, if this is something you choose to try.
