Redhat/Mandrake Vs. Slackware

Currently I have mandrake linux 9.1 installled on my machine. I came across a slackware 7.0 book which was really cheap ($8). My question is that how different slackware and redhat based distibutions are and whether I will be able to use the same commands and other words, will reading that book help me learn linux in general...
thanks in advance

in general, linux books are all - round helpful and somewhat similar, especially for terminal commands. i'd say yes, they would help most of the time, 8 bucks is a good deal.

RedHat and Slackware are on the opposite side of the spectrum in my opinion. RedHat users are newbies and Slackware users are gods.
