RedHat Linux Installation in an external hard disk
 

Hello All,

I'm installing Redhat Linux Version 4 Update 2 in a laptop(DELL INSPIRON 6400)
within its external hard disk. In the internal hard disk of the laptop, WINDOWS XP is already installed .
But in the installation process where I'm manually partitioning with disk druid.........only the internal hard disk partitions are showing....the external hard disk partitions are not showing.......

Let me mention that I've previously created three partitions in the external hard disk....1. One 20 GB Linux ext3 primary partition
2. One 184 GB extended partition
with no logical partition defined.
3. One 30 GB NTFS primary partition.

But these partitions in the external hard disk is not showing while installing Linux.

But the external hard disk partitions are showing in Windows XP.

Let me know how to get the external hard disk get displayed for installing the Redhat linux in it.

Does the laptop in the BIOS see and does it support booting from the external USB drive???

If no then you will not be able to do this. It does not matter if any OS including Windows XP can see the external drive after booting as the OS installs the driver needed to see the drive.

FYI: it is a good idea to let Linux create the Linux partitions when installing, just leave blank unformatted free space for this. Linux is perfectly capable of creating the partitions.

FYI: make sure you install the Linux bootloader (Grub) to the external hard drive so you can boot Windows XP without the external hard drive attached. The external hard drive need to be listed first in the BIOS also (boot order).

yes the BIOS see the external USB hard drive and can boot from it.

After booting from the external drive, as usual the wizard steps came up one after another.
In the step where I'm supposed to manually patition with Disk Druid......it must show the external drive..........but its not showing.
Unless the USB drive shows how can I partition the external drive?

Please boot the system with the installation media into rescue mode and show the output from the typed command;

fdisk -l

also execute commands and provide the outputs

lsusb
