Is it an NTFS or FAT partition?

You can use your FAT partitions directly in Linux, you don't need to create a new ext partition. However I heard that writing on NTFS is dangerous.

by the way you can use

fdisk /dev/hda

under console to partition your hard disk, but be careful, defrag first, otherwise you may lose data. and you can blame nobody for that
