redhat fails to detect IDE HDD on installation

Hi there,

I apologise in advance for this complete newbie question which I dare say I could find the answer to if I only knew where the 'search' area was on this site.

I am trying to install Redhat ES v4 onto an eMachine 210, unfortunately it gets so far down the installation path then informs me that it can not detect the IDE Hard Disk (which is present and works) instead it attempts to install a network card driver (rtl i think) then obviously fails.

Unfortunately, I'm completely stuck at this point, as beyond the fact that I know the motherboard is an 'Imperial gl' I can't seem to find any further information upon it (not to mention the fact that this is the first time I've attempted to install any version of linux onto anything).

If anyone could give me a pointer or two on this I'd greatly appreciate it.

Many thanks in advance

NB: I mistakenly posted this in another forum, I apologise :(

Don't think it call the disk as IDE disk. In Linux it will be known as hda.

It is possible that your disk has no spare partition and there is nothing an installer can do for installation.

Best way is to use a Live CD, any Linux Live CD, to create a partition for Linux (Type 83) of about 5 to 10Gb and a swap partition (Type 82) of about 0.5 to 1Gb. That way you can tell Red Hat installer to use them.

If your hard disk is full then you will need to run a software to "re-size" the existing partitions to create extra spaces.

Many thanks for your reply :)

The problem was far more basic than that.

I had forgot to configure the BIOS correctly (Slaps himself round the head then nervously looks for a dark corner)

Many thanks again :)
