redhat enterprise 5 doesn't see the network card

The message I get when I try and activate is "3c501 device eth0 does not seem to be present. delaying initialization."

Does anybody know what cards are compatible without downloading drivers and other such exercises?

Does anybody know how to fix this problem?

You should be able to discern a reasonable list by looking around in the the installed kernel modules. Start with something like /lib/modules/your-kernel-version/kernel/drivers/net. Your old 3Com card is about as old as there is. The list of supported ISA-bus cards may not be very long. You might find it convenient to upgrade to 10-base-T, or go really crazy and go to 100Mbit speed, if you have a PCI slot.
