Redhat 9 Server
 

Hi,

I have installed Redhat 9 server on my PC, but I have no gui, only command line. When I was installing it, in the application section I installed x windows instead of gnome. Could someone please tell me what I have to do, to install a gui or a command to fdisk the whole thing, so I can reinstall it.

well you wouldn't need to touch the partitions to reinstall, you could jsut install it directly, or infact you could use the installation proces to upgrade it and add those packages. however you don't need to do any of that at all. just run "redhat-configure-packages" and install it from the menu there.

You might want to consider not running Red Hat 9. Security updates ended for it almost 2 years ago now. In other words, your PC will be owned in no time. If you want something Red Hat, install Fedora Core or CentOS. Fedora Core is great for general desktop usage, whereas CentOS is better for servers. Or, if this is going to be a production server, you could also subscribe to Red Hat Network and use Red Hat Enterprise Linux. (CentOS is a free version of RHEL but comes with no support.)

Uhh... that's because you intalled X, Gnome is a desktop X is not.


RH is cool but roll with the new: Fedora Core 3.


EDIT: I might have sounded rude, you're new to this. I wouldn't really suggest setting up a server unless you know what you're doing and know how to set up security stuff but that's my opinion. I must agree - your computer will be "0wn3d", I highly suggest trying something like FC3, it is Red Hat but with new apps and a new name.

If you installed X Windows, you should be able to start the GUI by typing "startx" (no quotes). If there's an error, report here. Hopefully you installed a window manager too, because the default TWM isn't exactly n00b friendly.

Read acid's post about running redhat-config-packages (just type that command in at the shell prompt when working as root) and the other posts about running something other than RH9 (which indeed is getting quite long in the tooth).

I guarantee you're going to be on here asking what to do when RH9 has been hacked. Running RH9 is sort of like running WinXP with Service Pack 1 and no security updates, as well as no antivirus and an outdated and unpatched firewall. You're asking for trouble. I recommend CentOS or Fedora Core if you want free, Red Hat Enterprise Linux if you don't mind paying.

Actually, it's quite possible to keep a RH9 system safe by applying packaged from fedora-legacy and compiling your own version of software when necessary. Applying patches from fedora-legacy isn't that hard, although patch coverage can be a bit spotty, I've noticed. Anyhow, this is more useful for old systems that can't be reinstalled for various reasons. I agree, if you have a brand new installation, do go for something more up to date.

Also, much of the software on RH9 is fairly old from a feature perspective, and this is particularly true of the server software (httpd, PHP, and MySQL are all very old versions that are missing some features of newer releases).
