Unhappy Redhat 9 on Dell 4600 Freezing

I'm stepping out here. I am a total newbie and have just installed on the 2nd harddrive of my Dell 4600. Everything went for that now when I boot up (and even during rescue mode), Linux loads, but before I can get to the graphical screens, i.e. login, it shuts down my monitor. I should also mention that in order to install RH9, I had to do so in text mode.

I've been reading posts and see that this is seems to be an issue with some other people. I believe that I have to edit something during the startup (GRUB?)

Can someone please walk me through this step-by-step? I'm extremely fustrated that I cannot find an understandable way to fix this.

Thank you.

I am using NVIDIA GeForce 5200 128mb graphics card.

Firstly I may not help you , but some questions first and if it is a grub issue I have some knowledge.

1) what is on your first drive, what operating system
2) on this drive, do you know the boot loader type in Master Boot Record?
3) the text install is a concern for a modern distro, can you post about your processor speed and ram and what type of hard drives you have eg IDE scsi SATA etc
4) when you use linux rescue mode and get into linux, can you get a graphical display or are you at a prompt like a DOS prompt
5) assuming you have a prompt...what happens when you try typing
at the prompt? (for linux)
6) can you remember what actions you chose for grub? eg install to mbr, install to partition or floppy?

AND some nasty ones
7) for linux by graphical login do you mean you can see some icons or is it a black and white screen with the prompt?
8) any changes when you use linux rescue cd
9) what error messages can you see during the boot up process for any of these
10) by shutdown of monitor do you mean you have to push buttons to start it or do you mean it goes blank for a few seconds?
11) leading on from you know how to get into your bios?
and if so have you got some power management options that you understand and are willing to change.....I am thinking you have some power off option set in bios that linux is having some fun with
