Redhat 9 and Sendmail question
 

Thanks in advance. I have a dual-homed server, eth0 on the internet, and eth1 in internal - SERVER1. I can ping workstations from the server and the server from the workstations, from both sides so forwarding is working. To make sure it's working, from the server I'm trying to send email out to the internet (which seems to work), yet when I try to send mail to users on the domain (i.e. replying from a hotmail account to the mail I sent for testing) or received mail - I look in the logs and see (names changed obviously):

May 4, 2005 SERVERNAME sendmail[5306]: j44MuVjK005221: to=<user1@domain.com, ctladdr=<user2@domain.com> (501/100), delay=00:00:13, xdelay=00:00:13, mailer=esmtp, pri=30512, relay=domain.com. [10.10.10.11], dsn=4.0.0, stat=Deferred: Connection refused by domain.com.

Nutshell is, internal mail seems to work but external mail (coming in) doesn't work. I'm in a dual-homed environment and iptables is in use (though I don't think it's the culprit but I could be wrong). I can ping the hostname Am I doing something wrong or does this glare-out at anyone or rather, how should I go about troubleshooting this as I'm new to sendmail?

And I'm assuming you actually have a real domain with DNS and MX records setup to send to this sendmail mail server?

The above post asks if you have your own domain... I assume you do. Forwarding is more complex that pinging... I assume you are are forwarding from a router to your email box and then want to distribute?

On the email box, you have to have accounts setup for them to log into e.g. outlook (if windows boxes) must look for sendmail on your internal ip eth on the sendmail box.

Just a note, using Red Hat 9 on any server that faces the net is stupid. (Not calling you stupid btw, most people don't know this). Red Hat 9 has not received security updates from Red Hat for over a year now. The fedora Legacy project tries to fix this but they don't do the best job (kind of slow updates).

I would highly recommend installing CentOS 4.1. It is rebuild of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Source RPMs so it is compatable with it and free. It will also be supported at least until 2010, most likely till 2012, so you want have to reinstall again for a while.
