RedHat 9.0 monitor frequency over range
 

I'm a Linux Newbie. I was upgrading from RedHat 8.0 to 9.0. The reboot the system detects my monitor and I get the frequency over range error and a black screen. I've read other listings and there's talk about running Xconfig.. But I can't see anything with the black screen and I can't break the boot up process. The 8.0 was working fine. Now I'm sorry I updated. Help! :cry:

Dude, that sucks. If you know your monitor's frequency ranges (in your monitor manual, or you can find it online at the manufacturer's site [I found the ranges for one of mine at walmart.com - it was my first time using the text-based lynx browser! ...Talk about fun :p]). I would use the RH9 install disc and go thru the "upgrade your current installation" process, only making changes to the monitor sync ranges.

Have you tried CTRL-ALT Backspace. I had the same problem with my RH9 when I first installed, by holding down these keys you can get out of Xserver and have a text login. From there you can go edit your /etc/x11/XF86Config file for the correct settings for your graphics card.
I have an NVIDIA card and had to install the drivers first.

Hope this helps. I'm pretty new to this myself and apologies if I've got the key sequence wrong, but I'm pretty sure it is Ctrl-Alt Backspace, you may have to press it several times.

i installed redhat 9 for the first time, (also first time with linux OS).

it installed perfectly fine, on boot up i had a similar problem to yours, if not the same prob.

The problem for was the screen resolution. My monitor is quite new, but the resolution of 1024 by 768 is too high for it. Not sure why, i thought it would work.

At this time of the monitor complaining about frequency, it was at the login screen, but the screen display was totally black.

When the error was showing, i lowered the screen resolution from 1024 by 768 to 800 x 600.

Do this by holding CTRL + ALT + - (minus key).
If this works, then you wont be able to use 1024 by 768.
I'm using 800 by 600, dont like it much but its the highest i can go.

If this works, then you can always change settings in redhat.

Thanks gibbylinks! Ctrl + Alt + Backspace works. Modified the /etc/x11/XF86Config file and I'm back in business!
