Redhat 7.3 install hangs on Dell 4700
Hi All,
I am trying to install the Radhat 7.3 package onto a Dell 4700 that was previously loaded with WinXP Pro. CD Boots OK, hit enter for default Linux install, after about a screen full of Hardware descriptions, system hangs, cursor stops blinking, keyboard dead. 100% repeatable, even with various install options tried, eg "linux noprobe". Stops at the same spot every time; hde: Maxtor 6Y080M0, ATA (then slight pause) ide at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq14 Any hints? Could it be a faulty install CD? I have tried reformatting HD to remove WinXp, removed all other partitions to create one partition as well, all to no avail. Any help welcome. Cheers, Graeme. |

use something newer, even if the cd works. download from fedora.redhat.com |
Welcome to LQ!
Redhat 7.3 is more than 4 years old now, and has been superceded 7 times. The problem is that you have newer hardware, and therefore need a newer distro with better hardware support. I suggest Fedora Core 5, which is the latest successor to Redhat 7.3. I hope this helps --Ian |
Let me guess: You got the 7.3 CDs from a book in a library or used bookstore? Because years ago, that's how I had my first taste of Linux.
If you lack CD-burning hardware (laptop and all), downloading the other distros recommended might not be as easy as simply buying a copy of disks online, they only cost a few dollars. Also, buying a book (at a new book store) often includes CDs and a handy manual to answer all your beginner's questions. I know Fedora is often seen in bookstors this way. As a reminder to those out there looking to spread Linux; your tax dollars already pay for books at the library, and they buy books based on patron's recommendations. Why not grab a few slips the next time you're there and fill them out for the latest books about Linux distros which include CDs? Perhaps a few manuals you've been itching for while you're at it. Nothing like taking advantage of a free information-sharing system to share free software1 |
Any modern computer needs a modern OS, go what the others say for Fedora Core 5 is you like to stay in the Red Hat family.
