Red Hat Upgrade - Overwrite or Fresh Inst. ?
In my attempt to learn Linux, I bought a manual that included a CD of Red Hat 6.2 which I installed as a "dual-boot" along with Win98SE.
Today, I bought another manual that includes Red Hat 8.0 CDs. My question is - can I install this new version directly over 6.2 or should I use Fdisk to "clear" the present RH partition ??
The reason I ask is, the 6.2 inst. did not go "perfectly" the LILO is a little messed up and I have to use the boot floppy to load RH, without the floppy Win98SE loads.

Hi,
Simple. Use the same partitions , dont use fdisk, RH install will allow you
to mark partitions for formatting. Mark your linux partitions for formatting.
This is what I would and do do most everytime I install Linux over an
older install of Linux.
If you need more help let me know.

By selecting "upgrade current system" the changes in file locations between the versions have to be handled by symlinks, which can get ugly after a while. I suggest backing up any data you need, and starting fresh. If you can, I would also suggest downloading a copy of Red Hat 9. It has KDE 3.1 and a whole lot of other improvements. RH 8 was nice though. Huge improvement over the 6.x series that is for sure. Good luck..
