Red hat linux server question for backing up? Please Help.?
 

Hi, first of all, i would like to start from the beginning. i have a redhat linux server that we installed from the past 2004 and we installed it on a dell server p1800(or i think) and it uses a tape drive. before it was handed over to me to maintain, the command left to me by my former collegues are:

root#: cba -c -b -v -t -history
root#: cba -c -b -v -t -badge -base
root#: cba -c -b -v -t -image

id i do this commands,
it will back up on the tapes that i inserted on the tape drives. and i will have a backedup file on a tape drive now.

Now, 2015 we wished to update our system, and we want to transfer that
history,badge,base and image to a new location but on a new server with no tape drive.

my question is, is there a way i can do back up on an external hd or portable usb using same commands instead of tape drive?
and also the command how to activate the usb port of that server on linux, because when i tried putting the flashdrive it doesnt detect the drive.

please help me. its kinda important.
tell me the commands or steps how i can extract those file or back those file for transfer in flash drive. thanks

well redhat has 7 / 10 year support cycle

so that very old pre 2004 ( 11 years old) hit End of life a few years back
( guessing this is RH7 or RH8 or RH9 )
every 5 years is a GENERATION in computer hardware and software

so files ( and the OS ) from 11 years ago are TWO generations old

there is no really easy way to move that to new hardware


but

I would contact redhat sales and chat with them and there tech support on buying a solution from them

- -redhat will do the work - you just pay

redhat is NOT a free OS
you do have to buy a support contract to use it

Not much information to go on.

It would be really helpful to know what Redhat version you are running. That would tell us if USB support is in the kernel. You can look at the output of the command dmesg when you plug in the drive. That will tell us if the drive is recognized and I assume if recognized you will have to manually mount the drive.

I am unfamiliar with anything that might be a program called cba. Without knowing anything about what type of data or how the backup program worked there isn't much we can do. Are you trying clone and use the exact same OS version as the old? If so, as stated there will not be any support for new hardware i.e. SATA, ethernet etc.

I get the feeling that cba is a script that has something to do with tar command.
