Red hat linux 7.1 doest not detect my modem, says its a "winmodem"

Linux does not detect my modem, it's a " HSP56 micromodem (internal). Are there any drivers which will support this modem ? or will i have to go for a new modem ? if yes ,which one? please guide me through this .i am an eager developer who wants to join the open source community.

http://www.linmodems.org/ is your best bet, but its still a very slim chance.

If you need a new modem then pretty much any external modem that connects through the serial port will be fine. I'm rather fond of the Dimond SupraExpress 56e Pro.

There has been a lot of discussion on this forum about winmodems. Some will work, others will not. If you want to know if your winmodem will work, go to and do a search on "compatibility list". You should find something there that will help you to decide if your winmodem will work with linux.

As mentioned in previous post, an external modem atached to your serial port will work with the least amount of hastle.

However, a compatible internal modem will also work fine. I use a U.S. Robotics 56K Fax PCI modem. It was easy to set up, once I learned how.

Although I have no experience with this, I believe that any hayes compatible modem should work.

In the final analysis, I think I would stick with a modem that I know is compatible.

Internal modem=infernal modem...do your comp a favor and get an external. Have a look at this page for more internal modem info.
