Get a new linux distribution. Redhat Linux 6.0 is more than 5 years old and technology has moved on a lot since then.

There is a legacy software that runs in there, The user telnet into in and run a in house made software.

If the software absolutely can't be ported, in which case its developer should be hit, repeatedly, with a rolled up newspaper, and you're really stuck running RH6 then I'd advise you to be very careful. A lot of hardware just won't work on something that old and RH6 is chock full o' unpatched security holes, as it's old and out of support.

On to your NIC. What happens if you run "ifconfig eth0" (try "/sbin/ifconfig eth0" if it doesn't work)? Does anything show up? If it does, you're in business. Read the man pages for ifconfig and route to figure out how to configure stuff. If not, post back here.

Thanks BTmiller

I will try to run that command and I will post here the results, I agree with you, we should hit the dev.but he is long gone!!

Just trying to troubleshoot some network problems but in this linux I do not know where to start, but with your help I might fix the problem.

Thanks again

Wow... I started with RH 6.0 and it was a nightmare getting my Thinkpad PCMCIA card working much less standard NIC from a Desktop... It may be fun to play with but seriously... get something a little more up to date...

Thanks all

but I have thi free. ing software that I can not migrate to win as of yet, so that is why I am dealing with it, I think I have a nic problem as I am getting dropped packets, the problem is that I do not know where to start looking in linux, I ran sbin/ifconfig eth0 as per bt suggestion when I get the result ,it seems to be up but still dropping some packets, like I said I am a win guy and the more I look into linux there more I get lost.

I keep trying thou, any ideas

Thanks again guys for helping a win guy.

Does the system have a firewall? I think RH6 would still use the old IPCHAINS front end, so you might try ipchains -L to see if there are any firewall rules blocking stuff.

bt

I have a win enviroment the only linux comp. in my hold enviroment is this comp. legacy deal, with this software that I am try to migrate from this comp. to my win, the problem is that mean while i have to deal with this, so I telnet the sucker and run from the machine the software. but having problems with the packets my telnet is not working I can ping the box and sometimes I can not, at first I though was the switch but it was the problem. In win I know how to troubleshoot this kind of problem and isolate the problem in linux, heck is really hard, reason why I though that you guys could help me on this.where is the tcp\ip settings, where are the nic settings you know all that good stuff.

Thanks BT
