Red Hat 9 updates?

Hi Everyone,

I am pretty new to linux and am a little lost!! I just installed Red Hat 9 which I got the distro from here. I am trying to update the software and it does not update. It is requiring me to subscribe to red hat network. In reviewing the registration if you would like support you have to pay for it? Do all the linux distros need regidtration in order to reciee updates?

Best regards
ABFS

Hate to break it to you, but Red Hat 9 is an obsolete distro. It hasn't been supported for absolutely ages. I would strongly suggest you download the latest Fedora distro and use that instead.

For background, Red Hat went away from the home users desktop for a while and aimed at purely corporate customers. They then brought in Fedora as their testing ground - so Fedora is pretty much bleeding edge but still pretty stable.

Most Linux distros do not require payment, registration, or anything. Some have options to pay in return for some form of convenience or support. Other's simply encourage you to make a contribution.

Look around at http://distrowatch.com
