Red Hat 9.0, no GNOME ?

Hi!

The question sounds so simple that i almost not dare to write it down, but after all its a newbie place here:

How do i start a Red Hat 9.0 installation without GNOME?

Its running on an old system, and with GNOME its even slower than the MS Windows 98 that was on it before .) So i think pure terminal would make it for me, i want to speed up that little fella.

Do i need to compile my own kernel or such fancy stuff?

My prefered installation would be: Terminal style by default, and GNOME just if i call it from commandline...

Thanks

If you look at /etc/inittab you'll see a line...

id:5:initdefault:

Change that 5 to a 3 and you'll boot to a shell rather than X11.

To get gnome from there just type "startx".

or if u dont want to install GNOME

during installation select the type of instalation as server them ur can unselect GNOME and other unnecessary stuffs

Or you can try out other alternative desktops that don't hog up much memory, like blackbox, windowmaker, fluxbox, or my personal favourite xfce(www.xfce.org).

You can choose "Custom" installation and avoid the packages that are related to GNOME. I think that you can't afford KDE as well. So, better go for some light weight desktop or stay with the shell itself. I like the latter.
