Red Hat 8.0 Slow

Hi All
I just installed RH 8.0 (From iso images) on a PIII 933 with 256 Ram
2 HDD one Quantum ata 100 second slave Samsung ata 66.
RH is installed on the second 6 GB HDD.
PC has one NIC and has static IP.

The system is slow. eg If I click on the home icon on the desktop it takes about 25 sec for it to open.

Thanks
Chris

While Gnome might not take full advantage of a particular, say gForce2MX, video's hardware acceleration, opening Home takes 1-2 seconds.

Do you have RAID?

Linux_Moose, share your system specs with us and maybe we can suggest some next steps. I personally, would try to get my video card drivers updated. If you're using a video card with an NVIDIA chip, the official NVIDIA Linux drivers work supremely well. (in my own experience)

System

I have a PIII 933
Gigabyte MB Intel 815 Chipset (GA-6OXM7E)
HDD 0 Quatum 15 GB
HDD 1 Samsung 6 gb
ASUS V 7700 Gts Deluxe 32 MB Ram
OB SB 128 Sound
Lan Realtek 8139

I am starting to think it is a lan issue, Did an install of 7.3 last night and after tinkering with the lan it got slower :D .

Not sure how to enter the lan setting, I had a go might be wrong.
I have 3 PC's on a lan.
The main Mach Win2K with Cable modem, and lan static IP 192.168.0.1
THe other mach Dual 1 Ghz Win2k this machine 192.168.0.2.
When I setup the Linux machine I do not use the DHCP I give it 192.168.0.3 gateway 192.168.0.1.
Some of the setting I am nore about like DNS.

I have the Mach running Win98 now but left 7 GB free on the 0 HDD so I will load RH now, and give it a go.
Will not give up :p
So if someone can help with my setting I will be good
Thanks
Chris

:)

I found the Problem.
The Firewall on the Win2K mach was blocking me.
Did not show any of this in the log file.
I installed RH 8.0 set the network info to what I thought was right.
Did not tinker at all this time. Rebooted to Win and it was having troubles, disabled the firewall and away I went.

Rebooted to Linux and was faster than Windoze :p
Browzing with Mozilla no Prob.

Thanks All
Chris
