Red Hat 7.3

Hello all. I just installed Redhat 7.3 on my laptop. I went with the defaults and installed KDE, Gnome and development tools. I am aware that the kernal is probably old and would like to upgrade the kernal.
I want to advoid the RHN automatic updates because I don't really want to install with RPM's.
So, the question is where do I go get the latest version of the kernal with installation instructions.
Is anyone aware of any other package I should upgrade that came stock with Redhat 7.3. I am interested in upgrading the development stuff--gcc, gdb, perl, etc. as that is what I will be using the most. I will be mainly using Linux to learn how to program.

You can download the latest kernel from www.kernel.org, many things from ftp.gnu.org. Thy have many mirrors, so browse their mirror lists and find the one closest to you.
