Red Hat 7.2 external scsi raid unable to mount
Hello all and thank you for a nice website. I have been reading it for 2-3 years and found plenty help. No I have a small issue I cant find info on. Will try to explain everything as well as I can :)
I have a sym53c895 scsi card with external and internal connectors. I have 2 x 18gig drives on the internal connectors and a dedicaed raid on the external cable connector. I rev up the old raid and wait for a ready. Then I boot up my Red Hat 7.2 and do the following commands. ---- /sbin/fdisk -l Disk /dev/sda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 2213 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 1 6 48163+ 83 Linux /dev/sda2 7 136 1044225 82 Linux swap /dev/sda3 137 2164 16289910 83 Linux /dev/sda4 2165 2213 393592+ f Win95 Ext'd (LBA) /dev/sda5 2165 2213 393561 83 Linux Disk /dev/sdb: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 2213 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 * 1 2180 17510818+ 83 Linux /dev/sdb2 2181 2213 265072+ 83 Linux Disk /dev/sdc: 64 heads, 32 sectors, 80610 cylinders Units = cylinders of 2048 * 512 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdc1 1 64488 66035696 83 Linux ---- The raid is the /dev/sdc1. I do the next commands. /sbin/fdisk /dev/sdc I have also tryed with /dev/sdc1 but that does not work. Only /dev/sdc will change the ID System to whatever I select. Command (m for help): p Disk /dev/sdc: 64 heads, 32 sectors, 80610 cylinders Units = cylinders of 2048 * 512 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdc1 1 64488 66035696 83 Linux Just in case I change the ID to 83 and do a w for write and exit. Command (m for help): w The partition table has been altered! Calling ioctl() to re-read partition table. I will not be able to help you with that one --- but allow me to welcome you to LQ, and just tell you that the codes you copy-pasted from the terminal will look nice, just as they look in the terminal if you paste them in between
[ code ] ... [ /code ] Just remove the spaces around the words "code" and "/code". That way the others will read them easily. You can also preview the post before sending it. Anyway I wish you all the best ... help will come soon! |
Just a thought - try erasing the disk again (deleting the partition) and recreating it
Between doing this make sure you write the changes (exiting fdisk using w) and look if you dont get msg you need to reboot. If you have data on the disk you could verify the partition table(fdisk again) and run a check on the filesystem (fsck /dev/sdc1) - if this starts finding errors you might have lost your data but you can try and go ahead anyway Oh and btw - you can only mount partitions - not disks so its mount .. /dev/sdc1 and not mount .. /dev/sdc |
First of thank you for incredibly fast replies, havnt been sitting here for more than 15min lol.
This is what I tryed /sbin/fdisk /dev/sdc1 n to make a partition with start 1 end 64488 ID is 83 and System is Linux w to save config the /sbin/fdisk -l produces below code code [root@aiexchange /]# /sbin/fdisk -l Disk /dev/sda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 2213 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 1 6 48163+ 83 Linux /dev/sda2 7 136 1044225 82 Linux swap /dev/sda3 137 2164 16289910 83 Linux /dev/sda4 2165 2213 393592+ f Win95 Ext'd (LBA) /dev/sda5 2165 2213 393561 83 Linux Disk /dev/sdb: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 2213 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 * 1 2180 17510818+ 83 Linux /dev/sdb2 2181 2213 265072+ 83 Linux Disk /dev/sdc: 64 heads, 32 sectors, 80610 cylinders Units = cylinders of 2048 * 512 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdc1 1 64488 66035696 83 Linux [root@aiexchange /]# /code the fdisk -l produces lower code code [root@aiexchange /]# mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/fileserver/ mount: you must specify the filesystem type /code when I mount -t auto and check directory in /mnt/ below code is produced code [root@aiexchange /]# /mount -t auto /dev/sdc1 /mnt/fileserver/ bash: /mount: No such file or directory [root@aiexchange /]# ls /mnt/ cdrom fileserver floppy [root@aiexchange /]# /code As you can see I made a new PRIMARY partition, saved it as ID 83 Linux. Mounting still wont work its realy wierd. /Michael |
When pasting the codes you forgot square brackets [] around the words code and /code
|
ok - if you have recreated the partition mount it like this:
mount -t ext3 /dev/sdc1 /mount/yourmountpoint check dmesg / sys log for errors also see what fsck says if you try this command : fsck /dev/sdc1 |
Hi,
the steps to integrate a new disk requires to setup a filesystem after partitioning the disk. So this means you require to do a Code:
mkfs -t ext3 /dev/sdc1 Code:
mount -t ext3 /dev/sdc1 /somewhere |

I LOVE YOU! :) Dont worry Im married and have a wife... Anyway that worked, I have been fighting this issue for 5 days+ and finaly got it mounted. I actualy had to do following, /sbin/mkfs.ext2 /dev/sdc1 it set the raid drive up and then mounted with mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/fileserver Many many thx to all of you and I hope to be apart of this awesome community forever and ever and eve... well u get the point :) /Michael |
I am happy you got things right ... thats the beauty of the :Pengy: community
