Recovery from Acer Aspire One with Linpus

Hi

I have been asked to try to recover documents from an Acer Aspire One. It has Linpus Linux on it and will only boot to a black screen with a movable mouse pointer. If I press control c during bootup I get a command prompt (user@localhost¬) I can dir and see dcuments etc. but do not know any way to copy them on to a flash drive or network. Acer are no help (use the recovery CD). Any help you can give me to recover this important data would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I'm not familiar with Linpus Linux but it sounds like you are not getting to the X desktop. How much data are you looking to recover?

If you have a USB drive insert it and see if it gets mounted using the command
Code:
df -k
On ubuntu mine shows up under /media/disk-1. If the USB drive shows up you could copy everything in the user's home directory to the drive using
Code:
cp -pr /home/<USERNAME> <USB drive>
In my case it would be
Code:
cp -pr /home/user1 /media/disk-1
Obviously you would need a USB drive with enough free space.

If you make a Live linux bootable usb or cd (if supported) you can boot to a similar linux screen and use the gui if you can't get the command line to work.

Hi

Thanks everyone. I made a bootable Unbuntu flash drive, booted and copied everything to my Windows network - simple!

Thanks again.
