recompiling kernel, starting points?

Ok, so I have to recompile the kernel to enable loadable module support to install a DVD player (actually to comply with all the damn dependencies I need LIRC which needs loadable module support enabled in the kernel).

I've recompiled the kernel in the past and am not too worried about the process, however I was wondering if there is a way to use the exact same settings / drivers / configurations I already have with a default installation (fedora), but recompile to add loadable module support.

ie. there's gotta be an easier / quicker way!!!

help!

Thx.

Not exactly sure about Fedora but since its based on Redhat I suppose this applies too:
there should be a config-<kernel version> file in /boot, which you can load in either menuconfig or xconfig, just select load alternate configuration file.

on a side note its actually the /usr/src/linux/.config file which gets copied to /boot when you do a "make install".
