Recompiling Kernel - starting point

Hi I am running Redhat 8.0 but I think my question is general. When I start to recompile the kernel I use "make xconfig". My question is - are the settings which appear when running make xconfig, the settings which correspond to the kernel which is already installed? (The reason being that I want to make sure that the new kernel has all the features of my old one PLUS the new features I add.)

Thanks, Ian

That depends on where you got the kernel sources from.
To be sure, copy /boot/config-2.4.xxxxx to /usr/src/linux-2.4.xxxxx/.config

That will be a copy of what you have now...
