Recompiling kernel 2.4.7-10

Hi guys,
I was trying to recompile my kernel after making changes in the configuration using "make xconfig" but then on rebooting the kernel with an appropriate entry in the grub bootloader my root file system did not load. I have also included the ext3 modules in the kernel and recompiled the kernel but to no effect. While booting with the new kernel the booting process just stops and I get the message Root fs not mounted.
I have red hat linux 7.2 and kernel is 2.4.7-10.
Any help in this matter will be appreciated
Thanks

Did you enable support for block devices? use the config file in /usr/src/linux-2.4/configs (rename to .config). running make xconfig should give you a working configuration so you can just add or remove the kernel support that you need to do.
