Recompiling Kernel

I want to recompile my kernel in order to optimise performance and have SSE support. I know that if I compile to a different version that I need to recompile all the modules as well, but what if I want to recompile my current version? Do I still need to recompile any modules?

Just one other little thing - what is the easiest way to recompile a cutomised kernel?
