recompiled kernel, random hangs on startup w/ modprobe hid

this happens ONLY when i restart my computer during running. when the rs.sysinit script gets to the part where it probes for USB Hid, the script runs this line: modprobe hid ; my computer hangs indefinitly. however, if i just turn off the computer totally(power down, not restarting it), and then turn it back on, everything goes fine.. odd? why? possible fixes? i dont want to recompile AGAIN until i know what is wrong
