Recommended Linux OS for a beginner.

Hello, I am a first time posters on these forms and I am seeking some advice.
I know this is probably a an extremely over asked question but what would you recommend for my first Linux OS.
Here is my situation/plan...
I play on purchasing a notebook for my first year of college where I am taking Computer IT/Networking. I also plan on using the notebook for a home entertainment system via HDMI.
Only using Linux once (DSL) in my grade 11 programming class I'm unsure of what to use for my current situation. The programming teacher at my school has showed off and recommended Slackware. I know next to nothing when it comes to slackware and would like some advice.

Thanks, Kevin.

Welcome to LQ!

Use Slackware/Slamd64 and
Kubuntu (Kubuntu is not for beginning programming).

Slackware is one solid OS. Rock steady. And well worth the time to learn. That said Ubuntu is easy to install but so are most Distros now days. Where Ubutu shines is its easy of use kinda like Windows. No fuss no muss. I like Debian because it's easy to use has tons of programs ready to install but unlike Ubuntu you can have it your way.

Hi,

Welcome to LQ!

You can use a 'LiveCD' from 'The LiveCD List' to test drive a distribution.

These links and others can be found at 'Slackware-Links'. More than just SlackwareŽ links!
