Recommended file names for ssl keys and certs

It is my understanding that a separate ssl key and certificate is required for each domain name since when creating the certificate, the FQDN must be entered (reference Is this correct?

If so, why not name the key and certificate using the domain name? It seems obvious to me, however, every post and tutorial I have read does not do so, and I feel I must be missing something.

I've made them in the past using FQDN.key and FQDN.crt

You have complete flexibility over the physical name of these files.
