Recommendations for a wireless USB adapter with good support?

I would like to buy a wireless USB adapter for an older computer that I've been installing various distros on so that I can play around with them.

Are there any USB adapters which have good, broad support? Or does it really depend on the distro? I would think that the support would largely be driven by what is packaged in the kernel, but maybe that is just a newbie perspective
