Recommendations?
 

Can anyone recommend a free version of Linux I can download and play with (possibly one that supports games if there is one around).

Would probably be easier to ask for one that you *can't* D/L freely or one you can't *play* with... Maybe check out these "what's my distro?" threads scattered all over LQ?

If you'd like to try one out without installing anything to your hard disk, select one that comes as a liveCD/liveDVD.

Or use this techdemo [1] that demonstrates that there are awesome games available for Linux...

It is actually a live cd like knoppix.
