recomendations for a GNOME based desktop
 

I knwo everybody aska whats the best distro to try otu. But what I am asking is slightly different. I have used varies newbie friendly distros, mandriva, pclinux os, mepis etc etc. However these all have kde as there primary desktop enviroment, i know gnome is available but its not really there focus.

Are there any relativly simple to use gnome based distros that are aby good other then fedors core <insert number> and ubuntu?

What do people suggest? Preferabkly one that jhas kept the customisation of gnome to a minimum so that I wont have a headache trying to configure it.

fedora (and Redhat as a whole) concentrate there distros around Gnome, have you had a bad experience with the distro or something? it really is very good.

Gnome has it's own control panel and apps to configure itself, so it'll be very similar whatever distro it resides on

Is there a reason why you don't like fedora or ubuntu? You can pretty much install gnome on any system, but it may not be as integrated.

no i dont not like them, i havent triesd fedora I dont have anything against it, i was just hoping people would recommend other distros then those two because I already know about them.

Slackware is out of the question in any form, even in the form of vector, i dont really know how to set things up in all its config files so I would have a never ending flood of postson here.

I have tried kubuntu but never ubuntu yet, i know there pretty much the same except for the desktop enviroment.

I know gnoem is easy to isntall but distros liek mandriva tend not to focus as much development on it so when you go and do a update things on it stop working, im hoping that a distro who is gnome focused would not have the same kid of problems.

I mean at the moment i cant set anything up in gnome to do with cd's and removable medias becuase it keeps giving me some stupid message about hald not runnign when it is, and its only happened since I did a mandriva upgrade.

Plus im looking for better intigration with gnome as a whole as well as to try out different distros.

If you've used ubuntu and mepis, you'd probably be very comfortable with Debian. KDE and Gnome are both installed when you choose to include a Desktop Environment. During the configuration process you are asked whether you want XDM, GDM, or KDM as a Display Manager. Assuming you choose GDM, Gnome will be your default Desktop Environment, but you can switch to KDE if you want/need to.

I have been considering debian as its doesnt seem to have a preference to any particular desktop enviroment, but its setting up x thats scared me. I liked apt when i was using mepis. i will look further into debian. thanks fr your help any way.
