Ok - so where is the problem? Is it that you are expecting a GUI login screen?

If so, log in at the prompt there, then as root try running `init 5`. If that works we can change the default runlevel to 5 in /etc/inittab. If it doesn't work, do `ls /etc/init.d/*dm*` and see what is there: gdm? kdm? xdm? Then do: `/etc/init.d/gdm restart` (or kdm or xdm) as root and see if it works, or what errors it throws.

"One of the updates failed to install." also needs to be expanded on. What failed to install, exactly? One of the log files in /var/log should be an update log you can look at if you've forgotten. Maybe zypper.log (I rarely use Suse and could tell you for sure if it was Debian or RHEL-based).

Stage one complete

Ok used the Init 5 command and it brought up the login screen. I logged in and then re-ran the update but it is just looping. The update is sledp-1-libzypp recomended update for YaST update library (libzypp)Catalog SLED10-SP1 Update Type Patch.

I tried the other commands with no joy. I guess as the update is running it wont let me look at some logs. Any ideas what my next step if the update does not work? Should I re-boot and see what happens? Is there a way to stop the looping update?

in the /etc/init.d/*dm* is the following:

/etc/init.d/boot.loadmodules
/etc/init.d/idmapd
/etc/init.d/xdm
/etc/init.d/earlygdm
/etc/init.d/mdadmd

Ok now ran restart xdm and went back to shell and cant log back in with init 5 it says "Run 'yast mouse' to set up gpm

So I ran and now have to choose a mouse?

And now I have a blank screen

and im back in the room... logged in by rebooting and then using the init 5 command but lost again
