reassigning keys

A few of the keys on my keyboard are awkwardly assigned: thus, the double-apostrophe key is "@", and the @ key - i.e. Shift-1 - is the double-apostrophe. I'd like to swap these.

Also, the "pipe" key is rendered as "~", and the tilde is rendered as "¬" - and there is no "pipe" key - which is inconvenient.

Help gratefully received!

If you actually mean Shift-2 then this sounds like the UK layout.

You're right, sir! I stand corrected.

Now, is there any way in which I can get to my desired state? I presume that the layout I am familiar with is the US one?

What layout is your keyboard? Is that the layout you desire? Is it the layout used in your country?

Definitely a UK layout, and you want US. There will be something in your menu, as pan64 said. In my case, it's Settings — Keyboard and then the Layout tab.
