Really basic questions

Wonder of wonders -- I managed to get Linux -- now I can't seem to use it. I downloaded a tar.gz file...how do I use it once I get it ?

Our glossary might come in handy for this regarding tar :

Also this is asked all the time, if the glossary term doesn't help you, do a search on the site here, you'll see that this is asked and answered all the time.

Still stuck -- I got the Tar unpacked but now what ? I cannot find a procedure to install the program once it is unpacked.

I tried to CD to the directory where the install is and tried ./configure and make and make file . .. but it says "nothing needs to be done"

Is there a readme file? Go and take a look, instruction will be listed there.

Thanks for talking to me. There is a Readme that offers some command line options but these are for extended features and not for the initial install.

Maybe it is the way I am typing at the prompt ?
I am at root with the following install (program) or install (option) ( program)

I often get "too few arguments" back in the terminal

It's usually $ ./configure, then $ make, then $ make install.

Try here, or here, or this or this thanks to acid_kewpie. Have fun.
