Real Newbie Question - Going from KDE to Gnome
 

Ok, this has got to be the newbi-est question I've ever asked, but if I don't ask, I won't know, right?

After a month of working in KDE, I'm finally getting tired of the poor performance (I only have 64KB RAM, and can't upgrade it as soon as I'd like) and am looking at switching to using... probably Gnome, with either IceWM or Sawfish for a Windows Manager.

What I'd like to do is transport the best (IMO) features of KDE (desktop icons - I'm an icon whore, single-click opening, and my cute little Tux in a parka desktop image, for example).

Most of what I need, I'm managing to find on my own, but what I'm wondering is, is there any way to convince either Gnome or my Window Manager to open icons on a single click, or am I going to have to go back to double clicking?

Further, any recommendations are more than welcome as far as optimization tips... I really liked my quick glance at IceWM after reading some posts on here last night, and installed (and like) Opera for web browsing, and have been very happy with the cookie options in that. I was so proud of my computer the first time it rejected a cookie as being "illegal", I nearly cried.

64k of ram? id say kde is definitely not for you! jk...;-) im sure you meant 64mb hehe

with an older distro of suse i am using (6.2) comes with kde 1.x.... if you were using gnome you can type from a prompt: kfm

all of the kde icons would show up on your screen and you could use this... i also tried this with icewm and got the same results... so you can generally have your cake and eat it too if you use an older version of kde maybe...try it out maybe it will work...

i am not much of a gnome hound myself to be honest...i have become way too addicted to blackbox myself.

Oh my! Thank you, yes, I did mean 64 MB of RAM.
And here I was giving myself kudos for upgrading a friend's hardware by flashlight during a power outage. What's that saying again, pride goeth before a fall? :p

Thanks for the tip, I'll have to try that. So far, all I've managed to do is create a couple of new icons for kppp and kmail (I tried switching to balsa, but I couldn't get it to transfer my existing messages) I'm suitably impressed, though - I don't die in the first screen of Breakout due to the speed of my cursor anymore. :)

i made the switch to gnome about a year or so ago. now kde doesn't even cross my mind.

well to be perfectly honest kde seems to be extremely similar to gnome.... gnome is really not that fast at all IMHO...

Perhaps it is simply my particular install, then, as I'm seeing some incredible differences in speed. Given that I just pulled some cd's out of a Mandrake box and have been struggling just to understand what I'm doing well enough to customize my desktop, I haven't really gotten too heavily into making it run faster and upgrades and the like.

you might want to consider using blackbox... it cant be beat for speed nd attractiveness... http://blackbox.alug.org
