Real Newbie Question...
 

Hi All,
Sometime ago I was given a floppy disk by a friend so that I could install Linux-Mandrake. The disk was bootable and then presented a page of links from which I may download the core files for the operating system, I selected one and the floppy disk program D/L the files and completed the installation.

Unfortunately at that time and place I was not very interested in any sort of Unix or Linux. Now that it has been a while, I would like to give it another try, but do not remember what the disk was called or anything much about it.
Does anyone know what I am talking about? If so, could you point me in the right direction for this same style of OS installation?

you shouldn't need a floppy disk, most distributions prefer to boot straight from the cd. the image for the floppy disk should be on one of the distro cd's...

This is a good place to go to get the files (iso) and learn about the different distributions.

I think what you're refering to is ftp installation. Create your boot floppy, fire it up, and eventually you should get to a screen that asks you to choose installation media. Ftp should be an option. Not sure if this is an option for every distro though. . .check the installation docs

Thanks Linda, Link really helped... on my way to a Mandrake 9 installation. I'm pretty sure that it was Mandrake that had the Floppy to FTP install that I used, but do not see it available anymore, so I have settle with just D/L the ISO images and will install via burnt CD for a Dual Boot...(Win 2K Pro/Mandrake 9).
