I am really new to Linux and even more so to Slackware. I installed v12 sucessfully (I think) and logged into the system as ROOT. I am now sitting at the root prompt # .... How do I load the KDE desktop? Thanks!

Using the root account for everyday use is not reccommended. It would be safer if you were to create a normal user account and use that instead. To load up KDE type: startx.

Ya don't run as root for every day use, setup a user account with useradd or adduser then you will login under the user account. And then like has been said just type startx and this will start your KDE.
