reading files


Do you need a text reading program or is there a command from the command prompt? I have a readme i want to open but can't figure out how

Yes you do. Possibilities:

nano /path/to/filename
pico /path/to/filename
vi /path/to/filename
mcedit /path/to/filename

You can also use 'cat', 'more'/'less' (depending on which is installed).
Cat is not very good for reading very long files as you wind up at the end, and may not be able to view it all depending on your setup.
More/less allow you to see a page at a time then continue to the next.
Also try 'mc' the Midnight Comander file manager. It allows you to view your files, read or edit them.
