read/write ext4 partition from windows 7
 

I installed fedora 12 and windows 7 in pc. i can not access fedora partitions from windows. which software is suitable for this??

Windows does not recognize linux file systems i.e, ext2, ext3, ext4,...
So its not possible to access them from your windows box, however you can access windows partition from your fedora system.

for write you can use coLinux

A quick Google seach turns up explore2fs, which basically should act somewhat like Windows Explorer, but for ext2/ext3 partitions.

I haven't tried it myself (I haven't had the need to use Windows for a long time now :)), but from what I can tell on the site, it looks pretty good.

i used Ext2IFS in windows to write to ext2 and ext3, just dont know if it would work with ext4.

Sorry for posting to this late as it is a bit old, but I can help you. Yes you can read and write to ext4 file systems/partitions from Windows. I am running a dual boot Windows 7 x64 and Ubuntu Linux 11.04 Natty. I use Ext2Read, the latest update which works perfectly. I have supplied two links, one for info and to read and the other to the actual program. In the first link it indicates about setting up the ext4 partition weith the "extent" feature bit disabled. This is the one important criteria, otherwise you can pick up some problems.

So totally possible, hope this helps.

@ SCREWBOTTLE : Apparently , Ext2Read is able to read ext4 partition with the EXTENT bit enabled as is also confirmed by the blog you gave the link to . Anyway , great piece of software , thanks mate .

Quite correct, I jumped the gun as to the older version, the newer version can read ext4 with EXTENT bit set. Here's some more useful info I have found and am using, fully tested with no issues for both O/S's. The latest version of Ext2Fsd http://www.ext2fsd.com reads and WRITES from within Windows, to ext4 partitions. I've been using it thoroughly for a week now, copying back and forth within Windows, and checking the operation of both Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and Ubuntu 11,04 Natty with all fixes and updates in place, no problems. So I think we have the first good read/write application for ext4 and Windows. And best of all it does not care for the EXTENT bit set or not set, it just works.

So good usage to all who read this and did not know of Ext2Fsd.

Thanks! Ext2Explore works perfectly for me! I'm working on copying 40GB from my USB3 drive right now, and it flies right along!

Thats wrong information: Ext2Fsd 0.51 does *not* support writing on EXTENT enabled partitions. Read "Features" page for more info.

Ummm!!!! Shehi, you are not reading the post properly or the replies. If you are referring to my posts and replies, I did not say that Ext2FS supports "EXTENT" or not, I indicated that EXT2Explore, "another program" works with the "EXTENT" bit set or unset, it currently ignores it. And now I have settled on using Ext2FS, as I like it more than Ext2Explore, it too does not care for the "EXTENT" bit set or not, and it has no ill effect in the year and a half of use I have gotten out of it. And I am sure as is the many that have posted here since 2011.
