Re-Partioning lost my Linux drive
 

I have 2 HDs,1 windows, 1 linux (PClinuxOS) After re-partioning my windows drive (in Windows). I have Lilo installed on hdb3, however I use GAG as my boot manager. All goes well, I boot to linux fine except now when it looks for hda1,2,3,5 It can't find it and I get a error message " can't be found, dropping you to a shell,enter root password for maintenance"
after logging in as root, I try typing "Y" or "yes" to repair but of-course I get "command not Found"
Is there a way to fix this short of a re-install or or a wipe and fresh start??

Sounds like your Linux partition might still be there but is now a different number.

A good tool for discovering the available partitions is a Knoppix live distro which should detect them and enable you to view the contents of each.

You will need to rewrite your fstab and lilo files to accomodate any changes which you should be able to do from Knoppix by mounting the relevant partition read/write.

Then all being well reboot into your OS.

Others might have a better way of doing this however. Good Luck.

I'll second pri's sugegsion. A live-cd is your best option (short of reinstalling, but that would be cheeating, now wouldn't it?) Knoppix is a very good option. There are other live distros and it doesn't really matter which one you use, except that Knoppix has a lrge selection of very good tools. If you want something smaller (because downloading is slow or ... ) you could also try SystemRescueCD which has many good command line tools.

noticed this post while looking for something else, so it is a very late response. remembered something similar happened to me - the dev numbers got mixed around. there is an advanced option in fdisk which will put them all back in the right place
